Q:

Am I at risk of developing erectile dysfunction?

A:

There are several risk factors that contribute to a higher likelihood of developing erectile dysfunction. Diabetic men suffer from erectile dysfunction more often than their male counterparts. Smoking, blood pressure and obesity are also risk factors for erectile dysfunction. Certain medications can also cause erectile dysfunction as a side effect, and sometimes these are drugs that are used to treat depression (another risk factor for erectile dysfunction) or blood pressure. If you are unsure if any of your current medications may impair your sexual performance, address this with your physician.

Q:

What is the difference between a basal infusion and a bolus infusion?

A:

Some people with diabetes wear insulin pumps to help them get their daily insulin. There are 2 ways the insulin is delivered to the body by the insulin pump. A basal infusion means that there is a continuous amount of insulin that is being released into the body around the clock. You can think of a bolus infusion as an injection of a certain amount of insulin that is delivered when needed. Most diabetics need some extra insulin around meal time or exercise, and this is what a bolus infusion is.
