The Benefits of Creating a Birth Plan
In the past, women looked at birth as purely a medically driven procedure. They’d arrive at the hospital, the baby’s father would sit in the waiting room, and they’d leave with a newborn!
Today, many women create a birth plan. Think of it like a script of someone’s ideal birth. For example, you may plan a natural birth, or opt for an epidural. It’s a great opportunity for a physician or obstetrician to help alleviate worries and correct misinformation. A woman may worry about what using forceps might mean, but the doctor provides accurate info that eases her mind.
Here are some other considerations for making birth plans during your pregnancy:
- Who’s allowed in the delivery room during and after the birth?
- The lighting and music in the room
- Labor positions you prefer
- Religious practices you follow
Part of your birth plan can also include postpartum care for you and your baby, including:
- Cord clamping and cord blood collection
- Whether you’ll breastfeed or use formula
- Newborn vaccinations
While it’s a good idea to make a birth plan, remember that things may not go exactly as you expect. Talk to your physician, obstetrician or midwife about possible scenarios, including how to handle unexpected issues. The calmer and more prepared you are, the better your experience will be.
If you have questions about creating a birth plan, start a conversation with your primary healthcare provider, obstetrician or midwife.
