Featuring William, University Student

Duration: 1 minute, 12 seconds

I spent some time in my university volunteering with a mental health group that is kind of a service that’s put on by the student union that basically allows – it’s a service where people can come and talk to another student.

If they’re feeling down or whatever they may be feeling, they can have someone to talk to and it’s confidential and it’s just a service where you get training on how to validate and empower and listen to people who are maybe coming to you and saying that an event happened to them that they’re struggling with or that they’re struggling with a mental health issue.

But overall you get a lot of training and awareness on how to talk about mental health, because that’s a really important part of health that maybe doesn’t get as much attention as physical health, or it’s a lot easier to know when you’ve broken a bone and you need to get it fixed by a doctor maybe than having something that actually requires follow-up from a health professional.
