Alex Curtis Bio
Background I have always loved helping people and learning about human psychology so I am grateful to be in a career where I get to combine my two passions! Born and raised in North Vancouver, I attained a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of British Columbia and a master's in counselling psychology from City University of Seattle's Vancouver Campus where I wrote my thesis on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I have recently completed my Basic Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) training to better serve my clients and have trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which I frequently use in my practice. My favourite part of being a therapist is working with clients to identify and address issues surrounding relationships, self-compassion, self-worth, core beliefs, and those pesky negative thoughts! I believe in the neuroplasticity of the mind and that we possess the power to shape it to create positive, lasting changes. My goal as a therapist is to provide my clients with practical resources that they can use in their daily lives to encourage learning outside the counselling space. In my spare time, you can find me practicing yoga, spending time with friends and family, or enjoying the beautiful sights Vancouver has to offer. Therapeutic Approach I understand how intimidating and overwhelming therapy can be, which is why I strive to provide a relaxed and supportive environment for all my clients. I work from a solution-focused and strengths-based perspective, with an emphasis on Attachment theory, mindfulness, psychoeducation, and self-compassion. I tend to pick my therapeutic approach based on my client’s unique needs and goals. I have a practical but easygoing therapeutic style. I believe there is no “right way” to do therapy, so I encourage my clients to come as they are and be themselves. Coping with intense emotions can be stressful and heavy, so I enjoy bringing a light energy and some laughter into the counselling room when appropriate. As the saying goes, laughter truly is the best medicine! As a true extrovert, I genuinely enjoy being around people and find the career of counselling extremely rewarding.
