Sharaya Friesen Bio

"Hello, I’m Sharaya! I am inspired by the connection between our physical bodies, emotions and energy systems. Through the work I have done on my own personal journey and as a physiotherapist has revealed the strong connections between how our different systems impact our physical and mental function. I have had the opportunity to support numerous children, teenagers and adults on their journey, to decrease their discomfort, optimize their function and increase their physical confidence. As a teenager I was a competitive Irish Dancer. My exposure to physiotherapy as a dancer inspired my career path. Learning more about people and the human body as a physiotherapist has led me to start integrating other holistic modalities into my practice. I am in the process of becoming certified in Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB). CCB activates the parasympathetic nervous system (our ‘rest & digest’ system) which helps to decrease blood cortisol levels and inflammation while increasing lung capacity, metabolic function and circulation. When we breathe fully we create space for the body to release stress and trauma from the nervous system. This list of benefits is far from exhaustive, as there are many other psychological, emotional and spiritual benefits. The majority of my career has been spent practicing The Schroth Method. This method is primarily used to support those with scoliosis, Scheuermann's kyphosis & postural asymmetries. This method teaches individuals to elongate their spines, expand their trunks & to activate their muscles to stabilize in a more neutral position. Schroth has benefits for individuals at all ages, as the effects of gravity are always acting on our aging bodies. Becoming a Physiotherapist has allowed me to share my passion for movement, exercise & positive self-image through long-term therapeutic relationships. My intention in this next phase of my profession is to continue to create a safe, healing space for people who are ready to optimize their physical bodies and better understand themselves on their journey. To support my work with clients, I’ve completed the following courses: Transcend Academy: Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB) September 2020 - Spring 2020 Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School – C2 – January 2018 Thoracic Ring Approach – September 2017 Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School – C1 – November 2016 Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) Level 1 course and certification The Canadian Bobath Instructors Association Human Movement Course and certification Level 1 in Advanced Orthopedic Manual and Manipulative Therapy Diploma UBC Master of Physical Therapy, 2013 "

Yes, it is always important to discuss the information you have learned from videos or any other source with your local physiotherapist. They are trained professionals who can provide personalized advice and guidance based on your specific condition or disease.

The techniques mentioned, such as musculoskeletal ultrasound, rehabilitative ultrasound, manual therapy, exercise, and PRP, are commonly used by physiotherapists in the treatment of various conditions. However, the suitability of these techniques for your particular situation can only be determined by a thorough assessment and consultation with your physiotherapist.

In the case of sleep apnea treatment, it often involves a multidisciplinary approach. Along with your physiotherapist, you may also work with a physician, sleep specialist, otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor), and/or a CPAP specialist. Each of these professionals plays a role in evaluating and managing sleep apnea to provide you with the most appropriate treatment options.

Regarding maintaining a healthy weight, it is indeed important for overall health and can have a positive impact on various conditions. Sciatic pain or sciatica is a common symptom rather than a specific diagnosis. It refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and into the legs. This pain can vary in intensity and location, but it typically affects one side of the body.

The sciatic nerve can be irritated or compressed due to various underlying causes. Some common reasons for sciatic pain include:

  1. Lumbar disc herniation: When the gel-like material inside a spinal disc protrudes or leaks out and presses on the nerve roots, it can cause sciatic pain.

  2. Spinal stenosis: This condition involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots.

  3. Piriformis syndrome: The piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, can sometimes irritate or compress the sciatic nerve, resulting in similar symptoms to sciatica.

  4. Spondylolisthesis: This occurs when a vertebra slips out of place and puts pressure on the nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve.

  5. Muscle imbalances or tightness: Issues such as muscle imbalances, poor posture, or tightness in the muscles surrounding the spine and pelvis can contribute to sciatic pain.

  6. Trauma or injury: Accidents or injuries that affect the lower back or buttocks can lead to sciatic pain.

It's crucial to consult a physiotherapist or healthcare professional for a thorough assessment when experiencing sciatic pain. They will evaluate your symptoms, perform physical examinations, and may request imaging tests to identify the specific cause of your pain. Based on the findings, an appropriate treatment plan can be developed, which may include exercises, manual therapy, pain management techniques, and lifestyle modifications.

Remember, each case of sciatic pain is unique, and the treatment approach may vary depending on the underlying cause. A professional assessment will help determine the most effective strategies to alleviate pain, promote healing, and prevent future episodes.
