Philip Burman Bio

"Phil Burman has worked with the Dale Charles Physiotherapy team since early 2009. He received his Physiotherapy training in Auckland, New Zealand, graduating with a Bachelor of Health Science (Physiotherapy) in 2008. During his time at university, Phil received a number of academic awards, including the award for the top academic graduate. He was also awarded a research scholarship, and co-authored a paper on Injury Prevention. Phil has continued further education since then, including being certified by AFCI / Acupuncture Canada to practice acupuncture, and has earned a Certificate in Gunn IMS through UBC. Phil’s clinical work includes Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Rehabilitation, as well as Neurological Physiotherapy. He enjoys helping people recover from injury, trauma and pathology, with a focus on achieving functional goals and resuming pre-injury activities. Phil believes that active rehabilitation leads to better outcomes, and encourages clients to be active participants in their rehabilitation. This often involves using therapeutic exercise in combination with manual therapy, needling techniques (acupuncture, IMS), modalities and pain relief strategies. Phil enjoys the diagnostic process and problem-solving. He has developed a strong working relationship with the local physicians and surgeons, and an excellent reputation within the local community. Phil originally left New Zealand for British Columbia for a season-long ski trip in 2002. After meeting his wife, one season became many years, and he now considers the Okanagan ‘home’. Outside of the work, Phil is involved in the local skiing, cycling and sailing communities; most of his leisure time is spent being active outdoors. He lived at Apex for 4 seasons, and has been a regular skier there over the past 15 years. Phil has a long history of mountain biking and road cycling, both competitively and recreationally. He also enjoys sailing, and is an active member of the Summerland Yacht Club. Phil and Laura enjoy spending their free time by being active outdoors, skiing and cycling with their two young kids."

Sciatic pain or sciatica is a common symptom rather than a specific diagnosis. It refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and into the legs. This pain can vary in intensity and location, but it typically affects one side of the body.

The sciatic nerve can be irritated or compressed due to various underlying causes. Some common reasons for sciatic pain include:

  1. Lumbar disc herniation: When the gel-like material inside a spinal disc protrudes or leaks out and presses on the nerve roots, it can cause sciatic pain.

  2. Spinal stenosis: This condition involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots.

  3. Piriformis syndrome: The piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, can sometimes irritate or compress the sciatic nerve, resulting in similar symptoms to sciatica.

  4. Spondylolisthesis: This occurs when a vertebra slips out of place and puts pressure on the nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve.

  5. Muscle imbalances or tightness: Issues such as muscle imbalances, poor posture, or tightness in the muscles surrounding the spine and pelvis can contribute to sciatic pain.

  6. Trauma or injury: Accidents or injuries that affect the lower back or buttocks can lead to sciatic pain.

It's crucial to consult a physiotherapist or healthcare professional for a thorough assessment when experiencing sciatic pain. They will evaluate your symptoms, perform physical examinations, and may request imaging tests to identify the specific cause of your pain. Based on the findings, an appropriate treatment plan can be developed, which may include exercises, manual therapy, pain management techniques, and lifestyle modifications.

Remember, each case of sciatic pain is unique, and the treatment approach may vary depending on the underlying cause. A professional assessment will help determine the most effective strategies to alleviate pain, promote healing, and prevent future episodes.
