Dr. Nicole Poelgeest Bio

The holistic approach of naturopathic medicine is what attracted Dr. van Poelgeest to the profession, knowing that when the body is looked upon as a whole, not the sum of its parts and given the correct tools —nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management— it has the capacity to heal itself. Dr. van Poelgeest welcomes patients of all ages with a variety of health concerns, but has special interest in: • Digestive issues • Autoimmune conditions • Skin problems • Naturopathic cancer support • Women’s health including menopause & fertility (including pre & post-partum care), PMS, menstrual issues, endometriosis, and PCOS. A licensed Naturopathic Doctor, Dr van Poelgeest completed four years of naturopathic medical training at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine where she was recognized with the award for clinical excellence. She continues to educate herself gaining certifications in IV therapy, pharmaceutical prescribing, and acupuncture to name a few. She is a member of the College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC (CNPBC), BC Naturopathic Association (BCNA) and the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND). "I chose naturopathic medicine for its holistic approach to health and for the profoundly positive impact it can have on a person's life. Inspired by nature and perpetually in awe of the intricate workings of the human body, naturopathic medicine was an obvious choice to me. Recognizing that health is not simply the absence of disease, I help patients restore equilibrium to body, mind, and spirit. When these elements are balanced one begins to understand what it truly means to be healthy: to feel whole, to have vitality in one's life. Keeping this paradigm in mind, my practice focuses on digestive issues, autoimmune conditions, skin problems, and naturopathic cancer support. I also have a passion for women's health, acting as an advocate and health ally in the periods of transition unique to menopause & fertility (including pre & post-partum care), and providing natural support for PMS, menstrual issues, endometriosis, and PCOS. Integrating the wisdom of traditional medicines with current research, I use natural, nutritional, and when necessary, pharmaceutical remedies to tailor treatment to the individual. While naturopathic doctors are trained in a variety of therapeutic interventions, my clinical interest lies in herbal medicine, nutrition, IV treatment, acupuncture, and mind/body therapies. I use these therapies to co-create customized health plans with my patients. Following a double major BA in French & English Literature from UBC and two additional years of pre-medical sciences, I completed four years of naturopathic medical training at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine where I was recognized with the award for clinical excellence. I'm a licensed naturopathic doctor with certifications in IV therapy, pharmaceutical prescribing, and acupuncture. I practice on the unceded territories of the x?m??k??y??m (Musqueam), S?wx?wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel?íl?witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in Vancouver, BC and am a member in good standing of the following"

One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.

With this treatment, your naturopathic doctor can also infuse vitamins directly into your blood stream. Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms.  Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation. We can also measure hydrogen and methane on the breath to determine if there are any microorganisms contributing to these symptoms.  If you’re experiencing digestive issues of any kind and you’d like to learn more about what’s causing these symptoms, see your local naturopathic doctor.
