Dr. Kelly Fujibayashi Bio

Dr. Kelly Fujibayashi is a licensed Naturopathic Physician and co-owner of Vancouver Naturopathic Clinic. From a very young age, she wanted to be a doctor and after a minor health incident where she looked closer at the medical options available to her, it was naturopathic medicine that left the biggest impact. The variety and efficacy of the treatments presented to her by naturopathic medicine inspired her on both her journey to recovery and her career path. Her approach to practicing is both condition and patient dependent but the ultimate goal is to ensure her patients get the most from the least — big health improvements with as little intervention possible. She does this by focusing on the basic foundations of health: movement, stress, sleep, nutrition and digestion. Little changes to those core pillars of health have a big positive impact, ensuring that the patient is at their optimal state of wellness and feeling really good, naturally, before embarking on any other treatments that may be necessary. Dr. Fujibayashi welcomes patients of all ages with a variety of health concerns, but has special interest in Women’s Health, specifically postpartum and sexual health. She earned her bachelors in Science from the University of Victoria and completed four years of naturopathic medical training at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine, where she graduated in the very first graduating class. After graduation, Dr. Fujibayashi went on to teach a variety of classes at the Boucher Institute and eventually became the Associate Dean of Education. Her license as a Naturopathic Doctor is with the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC) and she is a member of the British Columbia Naturopathic Association (BCNA). "DF: Kelly, first of all, what brought you to Naturopathic medicine? KF: I became very interested when I was young, I was in High School I remember, and my sister's boyfriend at the time wanted to become a Naturopathic doctor and I didn't know what it was. So he told me to look into it. I knew I wanted to go into medicine and I wasn't really comfortable with the conventional route because of some medical problems I had as a teenager. So he told me to look into it and I did. DF: So this was really early. KF: Early, yeah. DF: So did you look around at the various schools? KF: I did. I went and toured Bastyr and CCNM and then I was working at Douglas College to make some extra money because I was still paying off student loans from my undergrad, and I saw an ad in the Georgia Straight about this new school opening in Vancouver. Which was perfect you know because at the time, this would have been 1999, the Canadian dollar was so bad that I couldn't even consider going to Bastyr and I really didn't want to move to Toronto. DF: So how was your experience at Boucher? And did it meet your expectations? KF: Yes. But I didn't have a lot of expectations. I loved my time at Boucher. You know everyone always says “How could you have done that”, but none of us really thought about it that way. We were in it, we were doing it and it was good. It wasn't as stressful as it seems, like when I look back on it I think what we did, I think “oh that would be really stressful” but it didn't feel like that at the time. DF: So what was it about it [the school] that you loved? KF: I loved the community, there was such a small group of us for such a long time and we really got to know each other really well and we felt like, even though it wasn't conventional learning, we really got to learn things really well. We would go on a lot of walks and learn things that way, or go to Chinatown and buy acupuncture needles and look at all the different Chinese herbal formulas and make tinctures and capsules. So just really

One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.

With this treatment, your naturopathic doctor can also infuse vitamins directly into your blood stream. Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms.  Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation. We can also measure hydrogen and methane on the breath to determine if there are any microorganisms contributing to these symptoms.  If you’re experiencing digestive issues of any kind and you’d like to learn more about what’s causing these symptoms, see your local naturopathic doctor.
