Dr Cameron McIntyre ND
NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN
North Vancouver, BC
“ The first wealth is health”– Ralph Waldo Emerson.
I have an undergraduate degree in neuroscience from UBC and spent a decade working at VGH. In a hospital setting, I saw the power of that realm of medicine deal with acute and traumatic situations very well. Chronic disease and mental health were not managed well in my opinion and I began to look at other options. The brain and it’s inner workings have always fascinated me. That and a wonderful conversation with one of my mentors, Dr Bill Mitchell ND drew me to pursue naturopathic medicine.
I will enter my 15th year of clinical practice later this fall and enjoy a general practice of seeing all ages of patients. I do have advanced clinical training in the following areas for your information:
ARI (Autism Research Institute) – All matters concerning testing and treatment related to autism/ASD, ADD, ADHD, PDD, etc.
IMMH (integrated medicine for mental health) – Integrative approaches for anxiety, depression, bipolar, PTSD, sleep concerns, addictions, concussions and cognitive decline ( Including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s)
I also spend a great deal of clinical time in the following areas:
Allergies – to food and environment – testing and treatment
Digestive concerns – including Crohns , IBD/IBS, infections – testing and treatment
Detoxification – testing and treatment (including heavy metals)
Pain management – including acupuncture and other injection therapies
Skin health – including acne, eczema and psoriasis
Men’s health – including hormonal, cardiovascular and circulatory concerns
My take on healthy living is adhering to that saying “everything in moderation, including moderation “. Sometimes life will be busy and stressful but having perspective and being present in the moment can help. Clean local food shared with great friends and family is key to me. Also to enjoy those times of celebration and not get upset if my diet goes off the rails for a short period. The stress of worrying about food can be just as harmful in those moments- in my opinion. Lastly moving in fresh air in the forest or near the ocean makes me feel completely refreshed and helps me sleep well.
I see naturopathic medicine fitting into our daily lives by making healthy food choices for ourselves and our family members, working on healthy stress reducing techniques as well as fostering healthy behaviors and spending that support our planet. It’s the only one we’ve got! Lastly to tune into our bodies and seek causes for what is present, not just take things for a quick fix.
I love the huge nature component of the North Shore- from trail runs in the demonstration forest to paddle boarding in deep cove, I feel so blessed to have lived here for almost 20 years.
My perfect west coast day is spent outdoors near the ocean. As a kid, I spent a great deal of my youth in Howe Sound and I feel very connected to the ocean. On a paddle board, a kayak, swimming or just playing in the water with my family- all are perfect to me. To end the day with friends and family eating a fresh local seafood feast would be fantastic!

One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.
The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.
Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.
Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.
With this treatment, your naturopathic doctor can also infuse vitamins directly into your blood stream. Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms. Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation. We can also measure hydrogen and methane on the breath to determine if there are any microorganisms contributing to these symptoms. If you’re experiencing digestive issues of any kind and you’d like to learn more about what’s causing these symptoms, see your local naturopathic doctor.
