Dr. Katrina Allison Bio

Dr. Katrina Allison ND “She who has health has hope; she who has hope has everything” – Thomas Carlyle I was drawn to a career in Naturopathic Medicine because I am passionate about helping individuals reach their ultimate potential. After building a strong educational background in biomedical science and research, I turned my focus toward ways in which I could impact the health and lives of others in a more personal way. Upon completion of my Bachelors of Science at the University of Guelph, I attended the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, Ontario for four years before finally returning to my home of Vancouver, BC. My particular areas of interest in naturopathic medicine are women’s health, auto-immune disease and immune mediated conditions, and athletic performance optimization. In my opinion, naturopathic medicine represents a system of care that prioritizes preventative strategies, life-long health and daily well-being. What drew me to the profession is the ability to spend time looking deeply into the concerns of our patients. I love becoming a detective when it comes to complex health conditions, and being able to offer insight based on a variety of diagnostic techniques and comprehensive testing. As Naturopathic Physicians, we prioritize looking upstream to find the reason disease is occurring in the first place, rather than just treating the downstream symptoms. I believe that by bringing intention to our daily behaviors, we can improve our health both today and in years to come. I grew up thinking of the North Shore as “Vancouver’s playground,” as I often ventured across the bridge for activities such as skiing, cycling, and hiking. I am excited to become a part of the beautiful community of Lynn Valley. My perfect day includes a long trail run on the north shore followed by a stop at a local coffee shop. I look forward to getting to know you and your unique health goals. I'm Dr. Katrina Allison, a naturopathic physician and long-distance runner. I've always been an athlete, and I love being on the move. I know what it feels like when it seems like you're fighting against your body to perform — and nothing is working.

One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.

With this treatment, your naturopathic doctor can also infuse vitamins directly into your blood stream. Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms.  Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation. We can also measure hydrogen and methane on the breath to determine if there are any microorganisms contributing to these symptoms.  If you’re experiencing digestive issues of any kind and you’d like to learn more about what’s causing these symptoms, see your local naturopathic doctor.
