Yogurt is one of the more unique and perhaps uniquely available foods in our food system. For starters, yogurt is a meaningful source of key nutrients like magnesium, calcium and potassium, which tend to be under consumed and can contribute to healthy bones and blood pressure.
Yogurt is also one of the few foods that directly provides us with varying levels of healthy probiotic bacteria which have the potential to contribute positively to the human gut microbiome and lower bodily inflammation.
For all those benefits however, yogurts real strength is as a facilitating food. It is very easy to combine extremely nutritious foods like fruit, nuts and seeds into yogurt creations to even further enhance its nutritional value.
When we consider that fibre and calcium are associated with a reduced risk for colorectal cancer, for example, a yogurt parfait with fruit and nuts has both of those key nutrients in abundance. Finally, certain types of Greek and Icelandic yogurt also pack a serious protein punch which makes them more satiating and more functional for active individuals with higher protein needs.
