Sonja began her journey of supporting families through birth and postpartum, after the birth of her second child. She felt lucky to have had the privilege of having wonderful support people (Doctors, Midwives and a Doula), throughout both of her pregnancies. After talking with friends she realized that most moms were not as lucky as she had been. They felt scared about birth, and that thought was alien to her. Didn’t every mom deserve to feel empowered? Didn’t every mom deserve the right to know her many options? Didn’t every mom deserve the right to access in-home breastfeeding support, if needed? Time and again Sonja got the feeling that help was not available due to lack of care providers, funding and time. She felt that she could help. Sonja began studying to become a Postpartum Doula in 2009. In 2010 she founded Tender Touches Doula Services. Sonja strongly believes that women are designed to birth babies, and breastfeed without numerous medical interventions - but that there truly is a time and place for everything. With a solid base of knowledge to draw from, she believes that the birthing woman is a force to be reckoned with. Sonja's continuing education has found her training on "The Farm" as a Midwifery Assistant, spending extensive time completing breastfeeding courses, shimmying her way through a Rebozo training with Gena Kirby, wrestling with car seats as a certified CPST and more.
