Dr. Kaitlyn Tougas Bio

Dr. Kaitlyn Tougas Naturopathic Physician Focus: skin health, cardiovascular health, diabetes, sleep Dr. Tougas was born and raised in Penticton, BC, and she is so excited to have returned to the Okanagan to grow her practice. She believes the journey to optimal health is a collaborative venture, and will guide and educate her patients along the way. She encourages strong, evidence-informed nutritional and lifestyle foundations, in addition to tailored treatment plans. She uses a combination of complementary, such as herbal medicine and acupuncture, functional, physical, and modern medicine to help you achieve your health goals. When she's not at WKIHC, you can find Dr. Tougas teaching yoga in the park, playing in the water with her two young children, or taking a family hike in the mountains. She also loves to run and golf with her friends and has the goal of completing Ironman Canada. I completed my Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc Hons) at Thompson Rivers University (TRU). It was an incredible experience and a time of immense growth personally, academically, and athletically. It was also during this time that I decided just how much I valued interacting with people in a meaningful way each and every day. I began my naturopathic adventure in Toronto at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM). After my second year at CCNM, I transferred to the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (BINM) in New Westminster - it was so good to be back in BC! I graduated in 2018 and I am currently a member in good standing with the CNPBC, BCNA, and CAND. In addition to my professional life I continue a number of athletic pursuits (most of which I've had to rework due to COVID-19). I'm also a happy wife (happy life!) and mother of two. In 2019, my family and I returned to our hometown of Penticton, BC. I'm so grateful to grow my family and my practice in the Okanagan. I love the elements of this land; it's challenging, peaceful, humbling, and nutritive in a way that grounds the mind and body unlike anywhere else I've lived. When I'm not in the office I like to teach yoga in the park, be in nature with my family, or play a round of golf with friends. I've also begun writing as a means of post-pandemic processing - stay tuned!

One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.

With this treatment, your naturopathic doctor can also infuse vitamins directly into your blood stream. Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms.  Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation. We can also measure hydrogen and methane on the breath to determine if there are any microorganisms contributing to these symptoms.  If you’re experiencing digestive issues of any kind and you’d like to learn more about what’s causing these symptoms, see your local naturopathic doctor.
