Dr. Jennifer Luis completed her undergraduate degrees in Cell Biology/Genetics (1996) and Secondary Education (1997) at the University of British Columbia. After teaching at an alternative secondary program in Vancouver for 10 years, she returned to school and graduated as a Naturopathic Physician from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (2011) in British Columbia. She has continued to upgrade and learn with additional advanced training in thyroid and hormonal therapy, SIBO and digestive health, LDN therapy, mold illness treatment and aesthetic medicine. Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism are important aspects of Dr. Luis' practice. Having Hashimoto's thyroiditis herself, Dr. Luis recognizes the challenges of navigating treatment and is passionate about helping others feel better using alternative prescription options and natural therapies. Barriers to health with a thyroid condition involve looking at metabolism and treating digestion, blood sugar and insulin balance, sex hormones, cortisol and stress. Dr. Luis has personally done the work and has helped thousands of people feel better. Dr. Luis uses a variety of methods to improve health such as hormonal prescriptions, herbs, supplementation, IV therapy, chelation and aesthetic medicine. A strong emphasis on the use of laboratory testing helps her focus treatment specific to the individual health needs of her patients. Diet and nutrition guidelines are a part of each treatment plan and any deficiencies are addressed. Having 3 children herself, Dr. Luis has a good understanding of the challenges of incorporating healthy life choices into a busy lifestyle. ? One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.

Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms.  Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation.
