DR. WILLEM (WINNE) MEEUWISSE SPORT MEDICINE PHYSICIAN MD, MPE, PhD, CCFP (SEM), Dip Sport Med Dr. Meeuwisse is a sport medicine physician and is the Medical Director of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is also an Expert Member, Medical and Scientific Group of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission. He obtained his Medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and then did a Fellowship in Sport Medicine at the University of British Columbia, where he also completed a Master’s degree in exercise physiology. Upon coming to Calgary he obtained his PhD in clinical epidemiology, focusing on sport injury prediction and prevention. He went on to receive his CASEM Diploma in Sport Medicine and a CFPC Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) in Sport and Exercise Medicine. Dr. Meeuwisse is the founder of the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, which was one of the original four research centres in the world recognized by the IOC. He currently serves as a Senior Associate Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine - Injury Prevention and Health Protection. He enjoys cycling, cross country skiing, and just about any outdoor activity; preferably with family and friends.
