Laser assisted intrastromal Keratoplasty, or LASIK is a procedure in which a flap is created with a specialized blade called a Keratome or the Femtolaser. This flap attached to the cornea by a hinge is lifted away from the rest of the tissue. The underlying corneal bed is then sculpted by an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and correct short sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The flap is then laid back down healing. LASIK is typically fast with return of vision within days.
