Manipulation is the term for a specific manual therapy technique.
A physiotherapist might choose to use manipulation, both in joints of the limb or the spine, in which case it would be termed spinal manipulation. Manipulation will be used to clear a blockage or an obstruction in a joint.
It will be used to help relieve pain and muscle guarding that’s associated with that blockage, and it can also be used because the sensory push that comes from a manipulation helps to reawaken the muscle system directly around that joint, offering better support. Muscles are often made dormant by the pain response of the joint.
Manipulation should only be provided by qualified practitioners. Not all conditions and not all people are suitable for manipulation, so check with your local practitioner as to whether this form of treatment might be suitable for you.
