Dr. Madeleine Elton Bio

"I am passionate about helping people on their personal journey to health and wellness. I recognize that life is hard and that everyone is at their own stage of readiness for change. Wherever you are, I will meet you there, and help you in a way and pace that meets your needs. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2011, I worked as a Registered Nurse (RN) for two and a half years before beginning my education in Naturopathic Medicine. I believe that there is a place for both Western and Eastern medicine in our healthcare system and believe that each person is the expert in how the combination of the two works best for them. As an RN I worked with vulnerable populations, with a focus on harm reduction and mental health. I also worked in the areas of sexual and reproductive health. During my clinical year at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, Ontario, I was selected to be on the Fertility Health focus shift where I saw patients at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic (RSNC). I am passionate about helping individuals in the areas of anxiety, depression and reproductive health (including fertility, sexual health, pregnancy and menstrual health). That being said, if your concern falls outside of these areas, please do not hesitate to contact me for a free 15-minute meet and greet. Naturopathic Doctors treat the whole body and very often, our different health conditions are all interrelated (mind, gut, skin, menstruation, sleep issues - each affects the others). If you just read that and are thinking “what does my digestive system have to do with my mind?” then it is definitely time you saw a Naturopathic Doctor! In 2019 I settled with my family in Hamilton, Ontario, in the east end, and love it! In my free time I try to get into nature as much as possible and learn more about anything and everything in my field (I especially love podcasts!). I also like to take nature photographs, slowly make meals and enjoy them with people I care about and see live music and theatre!"

One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.

With this treatment, your naturopathic doctor can also infuse vitamins directly into your blood stream. Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms.  Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation. We can also measure hydrogen and methane on the breath to determine if there are any microorganisms contributing to these symptoms.  If you’re experiencing digestive issues of any kind and you’d like to learn more about what’s causing these symptoms, see your local naturopathic doctor.
