I spent 95% of the time listening about how the surgery wasn't about quality of life but mitigation of pain. While acknowledging my pain, it wasn't significant enough to warrant surgery. I struggled to grasp how quality-of-life didn't factor in. I tried to explain how a couple of years ago I felt I was in the best shape of my life. Going back to karate and weight training, while often being interrupted. I tried to express how karate was a big part of who I am. It's a part of my culture, it's a philosophy, it's physics in motion, it's art, balance and budo. Understanding surgery was a no-go, as my pain didn't meet his threshold, I tried to understand how I could continue with my life. "So if I do my katas with controlled strikes at 100% I won't cause further damage?" He literally replied, "Are you telling me or asking me." Shocked, I replied, "I'm asking you. I'm not the expert." He answered that there was no guarantees. You might. You might not. I looked for clarification. How reattaching the muscle, rehabbing, strengthening, would not allow me to continue to do karate and weight training. "It's not about karrattee." This leads me to the less than 5% of the meeting. The tissue wasn't viable for surgery. There was too much damage to work with. Had he led with this important fact, it could have saved a lot of time for the both of us. However, it still leaves me wondering if I should just take his word for it or seek another opinion. His reviews have me questioning his motivation for shoulder surgery. He has glowing reviews for hip surgery, but, less than stellar feedback with regards to the shoulder. For now I will take his advice and deal with the pain that haunts me 24/7 and keeps me up at night. I told him I would continue with my katas, as he suggested I just continue to do what I'm doing. Which has me wondering why the consult. He could have just left a message on my phone. "The tissues not viable, deal with the pain, continue to do what you're doing."

His comments from the time I walked in the door were useless. I have severe arthritis in my shoulder and basically said take some pills, I'm not doing surgery. Barely gave me the time of day. He was rude, arrogant, uncaring, dominating and the most useless waste of time of a surgeon. He definitely cares about his success rate more than my well being. So I sit here in the most extreme pain with no help. The only plus side was his receptionist was nice.

His arrogance gets in the way of a proper discussion for care. Dismissed me with no followup program after I broke my wrist, and he completely missed the sprain. Not enough money in it for him. He may be an OK medical mechanic, so avoid him unless you present him with an easy case in his personal area of interest. He is in it for the glory and a high success rate. He sent me on my way, with a swollen arm, shiny and red, with not a care for follow up treatment. I sought my own physiotherapy (never suggested by him) and within the first session, there was improvement. I'm sure I would still have immobility and pain if I listened to him.

Refused my shoulder (torn rotator.)..hes all about % success rate on his record not about patients well being. His solution was cut bicep muscle and leave my arm dangling....I wouldnt give this guy the time of day after waiting over a year to see him. Cocky arrogant and a true piece of you know what. I am going to mexico to get a real doctor to fix me. I gave up on canadian medical system. He cost me 7 years so far.

I found dr. Z to be knowledgeable, kind, smart, professional as well as an xceptional surgeon. He may not have the best 'bedside' manner, but I had no plans to further our relationship. I would definitely seek his surgical care again should I require a second hip replacement.
