We all forget things as we age, but that doesn’t mean we have dementia. Dementia isn’t just one condition - it’s a term that refers to symptoms that cause a decline in mental ability that interferes with daily life. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia and accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases. Vascular dementia is the second most common dementia type and occurs after a stroke. Memory loss that worsens over time can be another type of dementia.  Pour plus d'informations et les services locaux des psychiatres locaux à Montréal et à Québec PQ, contactez votre psychiatre local

I’m writing to share my extremely negative experience with Dr. Robert Notkin. On November 5, 2024, I had a session with him that turned into a grueling five-hour interrogation. During this time, I was not allowed to speak or explain myself. My words were twisted, misinterpreted, and completely distorted. At the end of the session, Dr. Notkin told me that while he wouldn’t call me a prostitute, my behavior “looked like street-level prostitution,” which was an incredibly hurtful and damaging remark. I have never behaved in such a manner, and this comment felt like a personal attack. Following the session, Dr. Notkin read to me the notes he had sent to my family doctor. These notes contained maybe 10% truth based on what I had shared, but the rest was fabricated or distorted. I left the session feeling utterly devastated, overwhelmed with feelings of depression and shame. It’s been three days since that meeting, and I still feel terrible. I’m now terrified about how my family doctor might perceive me or my life after reading these false and harmful conclusions. I would strongly advise against seeing Dr. Notkin. No one should have to endure what I went through, especially when seeking psychological help. If there are any organizations or services available to file a formal complaint against him, I would like to know how to proceed, as I believe no one else should be subjected to the trauma I experienced. What happened to me felt like a form of torture, and it is something no one should have to face when reaching out for help.

My experience with Dr. Notkin was less than optimal. The assessment felt linear and rushed, with Dr. Notkin relying on a vague checklist to meet diagnostic criteria. These matters can be far more complex. Additionally, he displayed impatience and irritability when I sought clarification, which is particularly concerning for a mental health professional who should be patient and empathetic. This behavior increased my anxiety during the session, making it difficult for me to answer questions accurately. Others have noted that his assessments feel more like interrogations rather than supportive evaluations. Furthermore, he dismissed my ADHD diagnosis, which was previously confirmed through thorough interviews and tests from my previous assessment, based solely on his vague checklist. I was referred to him for an OHIP-covered assessment by my family doctor, so I had limited choice in the matter. If you have the option, I would not recommend this doctor, as his approach could potentially retrigger past traumas.

Misdiagnosed by Notkin. When asking for clarification he kept interrupting me. Rude and condescending. Extremely dismissive. It is clear he does not care about his patients and this is just a pay check to him.

30yr old female here. My appointment with Dr Notkin went well. He may seem a bit brusque but there’s a lot to cover in a couple of hours - and he is not a therapist. In hindsight, I could have been more honest with him at times as I did feel slightly judged, but that’s on me. Who cares if a specialist judges you- you’re here for their expertise and might as well give them the full picture. My GP referred me to Dr Notkin for help with (seemingly) treatment-resistant depression, and for clarification regarding BDP. I provided Dr Notkin with a list of meds I’ve tried in the past, and left the appointment with a clear game plan as to drug regime and alternative treatment to consider if said regime doesn't help. A chunk of the appointment consists of listening to Dr Notkin dictate his report, which gives you an opportunity to correct or clarify any mistakes. He clearly knows his stuff. I’d recommend him in a heartbeat.

Similar to the negative experiences above I felt interrogated and unheard and he spoke in accusative way. He was very dismissive. There was no cultural awareness or sensitivity. Overall it was very horrible retraumatizing experience.

It felt like an interrogation and I felt unsafe and being accused. Not only was I dismissed immediately about my concerns and was not given a chance to elaborate but I did not feel that my right to consent about sharing of information was respected. I felt exactly the same way as the other reviewers who had a poor experience, word for word. Unfortunately, my family doctor had asked me to go and I didn't think I could refuse at the time. Always listen to the reviews folks.

When seeking consultation on mental health, I would expect to be treated with empathy and made comfortable to communicate myself truly. In this case, Dr Notkin's assessment felt like an interrogation. Furthermore, he dismissed me of my current ADHD diagnosis entirely, despite his clear acknowledgement of my attention symptoms; cutting off my explanations often, snapping at me to focus and listen clearly, causing us to exceed the 4-hour time limit. I found the observations Dr Notkin presented as insightful, but not helpful.
