Dr. Nick Tsaggarelis Bio

Physical medicine is defined as a remedy for treating, preventing, or alleviating the symptoms of disease (dis-ease) of the physical body which often prevents people from achieve optimal movement and performance. Physical medicine is also what I provide my patients as a means of optimizing their movement, performance and health. I integrate a variety of therapies such as Fascial Distortion Model (FDM), instrument assisted fascial release, Active Release Therapy (A.R.T.), Fascial Manipulation; Chiropractic Joint Manipulation and Mobilization; Osteopathic Manipulative Therapies; Contemporary Medical Acupuncture; and Kinesiology Taping to restore optimal function to the nervous system, muscles and joints in order to reduce pain and promote healing. Following this, active rehabilitation is used and is a combination of exercises, postures and movement corrections that are provided to my patients to ensure that you are able to return to full health, i.e., rehabilitate your body and prevent further pain, dysfunction and any exacerbation of your condition. My goal is to provide the answers my patients are looking for regarding their pain and dysfunction and offer the means to help optimize their movement, performance and health. Here is a little about me. I grew up in East York with my two older sisters, my parents and grandparents. My parents worked really hard to give the best to my sisters and myself and I am grateful to them for always supporting us in our decisions and their ability to offer any help they could. This help sometimes came in the form of maintaining my culture by sending us to Greek School three times a week, Greek Folk Dancing once a week and music lessons during all my other free time. My first experience with the healing arts was with my family doctor, Dr. Teperman, an amazing individual, he could speak English, Greek and Hebrew, seldom prescribed pharmaceutics and was aware of when he needed to refer out to other health care providers. I then experienced Chiropractic as I use to visit the chiropractor with my eldest sister for some general musculoskeletal complaints she had and thought what he did was quite interesting. My grandmother was very “traditional” in her approach to health, amongst other modalities from “the old country” she used cupping to help rid my grandfather, friend and of course family of aches and pains. Little did I know that cupping was not something from the orient, but rather originally from what historians believe to have been Greece or possibly Egypt and is something that I now use to help with getting fascia moving and ridding people of pains and aches that are stubborn and do not like to get better with any other modality. In high school I thought I was going to become an Engineer or Architect and it wasn’t until a shop teacher persuaded me to consider the health care field as a way I can help people in a greater way then these other professions (today, I however think that each profession is equally important in our society), thank you Mr. Hennington for placing me on my journey to becoming a Chiropractor and crafting health in stead of structures. Nonetheless it was around the same time that I started becoming involved in rehabilitative therapies myself due to some terrible cycling accidents (I use to mountain bike as well as BMX and skateboard at the time which probably attributed to some of the aches and pains I was feeling) and I felt as thought I could truly entertain a career in the health care field. I then convinced myself that perhaps it was medicine that I wanted to embark on. This along with the tutelage of my then football and Track & Field coach, Ted Temertzoglou, I was exposed to what hard work and diligence can provide you (at the time I had never played any sports) and how important physical activity was to great health, thanks a lot Ted. So, I signed up for a co-op placement for something health care related and received a position at Toronto General Hospital in the Cardiology department. Through my orientation and a few weeks at the hospital, I realized that being in there did not make me happy at all and that perhaps medicine is not what I thought it would be. Nonetheless, I was off to university and decided to enroll in the Kinesiology Program at McMaster University (at the time to try and get into Medical School there as I thought a problem-based approach to medical education was the best for me and McMaster was the best program in the day). And, since I wanted to learn as much as I could about the human body before medicine, Kinesiology (the study of human movement) would be the best way to go. During my time at McMaster I started personal training and became involved in teaching personal training certification courses. It was also during this time that I realized that becoming a Medical Doctor was not what I wanted and that using my hands and working in the field of rehabilitation was something I was more interested in. And that is where my true passion started. Chiropractic, meaning done by hand in Greek, was something that resonated with me. Here I could problem solve, understand what is ailing someone and preventing them from moving properly and subsequently help people with MY hands. I could also educate them on proper lifestyle choices and movements that will restore them to better health. So I applied and was accepted to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC). Through my education at CMCC I was fortunate enough to becoming involved with various chiropractic techniques, work with fantastic clinicians that shaped the way I practice with a special thank you to Colin Crawford and Glen Harris the two of you are still really appreciated and thought of. Then came acupuncture, it was back to McMaster University where I enrolled in the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program. During my time with the acupuncture program I met Dr. Alejandro Elorriaga and thank him for the time he spend mentoring me and teaching me about the evaluation of musculoskeletal conditions, acupuncture and sports medicine. I subsequently helped in the teaching of the program and this developed my next passion, teaching. After graduating chiropractic college and at the beginning of my career as a Chiropractor, I decided to further my education and earned my Masters of Education from the University of Toronto (OISE), in the field of Healthcare Professionals Education focusing on how the Neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) System is taught in Higher Education. From this I enjoyed the position of Director of Education and Research for SpiderTech Inc. It was my responsibility to develop and implement educational programs as well as develop a “Train the Trainer program” in Australia, North America, South America, South Africa and Scandinavia. I had the privilege to lecture well over 1000 hours on kinesiology taping and manual medicine in these and other international countries such as China, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal and Spain. After extensive travel and a corporate position as the Director of Education and COO of Collaborans Inc., a Multimedia Healthcare and Fitness Education Agency which helps to bring together professionals from various disciplines to create fun and interactive products like Feeling Pretty Remarkable, I decided to give up traveling and focus my attentions on my original passion, treating patients and optimizing their health and performance as well as my new-found loves — my family. Since returning to full time clinical practice in January 2014 I have been able to spend more time at home with my wonderful supportive wife, Erieti and my three lovely and curious children, Sofia (my eldest daughter), Athina (the younger daughter) and Panos (my baby boy). As time passes, I realize all my personal and professional interactions have made me the person that I am today and I am grateful for every experience and thankful that they have allowed me to be able to help become a healer for my patients and enjoy my time with my friends and family. I offer an integrative approach to the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of pain and dysfunction, with a keen interest in sports medicine and movement disorders. My goal is to provide the answers my patients are looking for regarding their pain and dysfunction and offer the means to help optimize their movement, performance and health. For over a decade, I have appreciated the privilege of sharing my knowledge, instructing and lecturing on advances in Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Soft Tissue Therapies, Exercise Techniques, and Kinesiology Taping. I earned my Bachelor of Kinesiology from McMaster University, my Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC), and my Masters of Education from the University of Toronto (OISE), in the field of Healthcare Professional Education focusing on how the Neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) System is taught in Higher Education. It's great that you're considering chiropractic care for various conditions. Chiropractors can indeed provide treatments to address neuromusculoskeletal issues, including those related to scoliosis, hip and pelvis pain, and shoulder arthritis. However, it's important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional, such as a local chiropractor, to determine the most appropriate treatment approach for your specific situation.

For scoliosis, chiropractic care may involve spinal adjustments and exercises aimed at improving posture and reducing spinal curvature. A chiropractor can assess the severity of scoliosis and provide appropriate treatment recommendations.

In the case of hip and pelvis pain, chiropractors can assess the underlying cause of the pain and provide treatments such as spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, exercises, and other modalities to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.

Regarding shoulder arthritis, chiropractors may offer non-surgical treatment options to help manage the condition. These options can include rest, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), chiropractic adjustments to improve range of motion, corticosteroid injections, and heat/cold therapy. However, the specific treatment plan would depend on the individual's condition and should be discussed with a chiropractor.

Remember, while chiropractic care can be beneficial for many individuals, it's important to have a thorough evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional to ensure that the treatments are appropriate for your specific needs. Consulting with a local chiropractor would allow you to discuss your condition in detail and determine the best course of action.
