The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" (although there are some doulas who are males) and refers to a trained professional who provides continuous support to the mother before, during and just after birth. A doula helps a woman and her partner prepare for birth and stays with them throughout the labour. In treating patents a doula may also educate them on emotional and physical comfort measures, pain management during labour and massage during labour.
