The nutritional benefits of grapefruit Andy De Santis, RD, Registered Dietitian

Grapefruits are part of the tropical citrus fruit family and share the high vitamin C content of related food family members like oranges.

High Vitamin C foods are always smart to pair with plant-based iron sources like oatmeal, cereal, whole grain bread, beans, nuts and seeds since it enhances the iron absorption from these foods.

Grapefruits also happen to contain significant amounts of Vitamin A and meaningful amounts of fibre, potassium and magnesium too.

These are key nutrients which are at risk of being under consumed, so consuming foods that have them all in one place is always useful.

There unique combination of nutrients and fibre make them an ideal food for anyone looking to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Grapefruit has a low glycemic index and relatively minimal effect on blood sugar levels, with multiple studies showing it contributes positively to insulin resistance and blood sugar management.

Grapefruits are also home to relatively elusive phytochemical compounds like lycopene, which is may have unique prostate health benefits and flavonones, a family of antioxidant compounds which may slow cognitive decline and exhibit a strong anti-inflammatory effect in the body.
