Cherries are what are known as stone fruits and exist in two varieties, tart and sweet.
They are among a relatively small group of foods that contain large amounts of polyphenol compounds known as anthocyanins which are associated with long-term cognitive health, heart health and improvements in important areas like insulin resistance and inflammation.
Because of their potent anti-inflammatory characteristics, cherry consumption may have unique benefits to people living with gout or arthritis, with limited human evidence suggesting a positive benefit of cherry consumption on those conditions.
Beyond that, cherries have nutritional characteristics that we’d expect from most fruits including containing meaningful amounts of fibre, potassium and Vitamin C.
Whether frozen as a fun treat, as a post meal dessert, dried in a trail mix or pitted in a salad – there are infinite ways to enjoy this extremely fun variety of fruit.
