So, nutrition plays a large role in glucose control. When you think of food, think of it in three macronutrient categories. We have our carbohydrates, our proteins and our fats.

Carbohydrates are what cause our blood sugars to rise, whereas proteins and fats do not. However, protein can help to anchor carbohydrates in a meal, preventing a large blood sugar increase. Carbohydrates come from grain products, fruits and vegetables, and some dairy.

When planning a meal, the best thing to do is centre your meal around a protein source. Next, think about filling half your plate full of brightly-coloured fruits and vegetables, and if you do choose a grain product or a starchy vegetable, try to keep the portion to a fist-sized volume or less.

If someone has more questions on nutrition, about how to manage their blood glucose levels, they should contact a local dietitian, certified diabetes educator, or diabetes specialist.
