  My family was one of the first patient's of Doctor's Peter McEnery's when he moved to Bancroft, Hastings, Ontario, Canada in June 1974 after graduating from the University of Ottawa were he grew up right up till he retired in July 2018. He was the best, Peter delivered both of my children, plus over a 150 others. Peter really enjoyed delivering babies no matter the time of day, once a mother to-be arrived at the Bancroft Red Cross Hospital he stayed near by till she delivered. He'd even let the father to-be stand beside him & watch like he did with me & my two. For our son my wife went into labour before 9am Christmas Day, & didn't deliver till nearly midnight, she wrecked his Christmas with his family of four children, but he didn't seem to mine that, it was just part of being a country doctor. He was more than a doctor to all of his patients, he was a friend. Every Thursday afternoons till his retirement he was one of the last doctors to do house calls all over northern Hastings, & eastern Haliburton Counties to them that were house bound & couldn't make it into his office. Five days a week from 8am to well after 6pm his offices was open to his patients, as well as some Saturday mornings, Peter had the biggest practice in most of Ontario. When you were in the hospital his bedside support was the best, 5:30am-7:45am, 7 days a week he was there taking care of his patients, then after his office closed for the day he'd pop in again to see how you were doing. In the old Red Cross Hospital Peter did minor operations, as well as setting 100's of broken bones. If one of his patient's was to sick to be look after in Bancroft quite often he jump into the ambulance & go with them to Peterborough, Belleville, or even to Kingston. Once he had my wife flown from Bancroft air port down to Kingston Hospital, & he went with her in case something got worst with her health while being transported. How many doctors would do that for the well fare of their patient? It was a sad day when Peter shut his office for good. He also employed 2 nurses, a receptions' & 2 other ladies to take care of the paper work in his inner office. When he built his office building he designed it that it could accommodate his patient's in his three examination rooms, on the west end, and another reception's office plus 2 more examination rooms for another doctor to see his patient's in on the east end. Over the years he gave a lot of new doctor's their start by offering this office space free of charge to get them to stay in Bancroft after getting their license. And it worked too, many stayed, raised their own families & built their own offices near by. When it was empty, then specialist from the larger cities used this space to save people from our area having to travel long distances to see them. Peter & his wife Susan are well respected around the area. Many people owe their lives to the McEnery family, & the loving care they got.
