Dr. Karen Johnston – Neurosurgeon, Dr Karen Johnston MD, PhD, FRCSC is a neurosurgeon whose speciality is in the field of brain injury. Much of her clinical and research practices focus on sports head injury and treating concussions in athletes. She is an international neurosurgical consultant to professional and amateur sporting groups including the National Hockey League (NHL), NHL Players Association, Canadian Football League (CFL), national and international Olympic teams. Johnston is a member of the Concussion in Sport Group of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Federation International Football Association (FIFA) International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Rugby Board (IRB) as well and past member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine. Her academic interests include authorship of numerous publications in both clinical and research aspects of a concussion. She is also a member of the American College of Sport Medicine, Wilderness Medical Society, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is currently Chair of the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine (CASEM) Wilderness Medicine Group. She has an extensive community involvement in concussion education and prevention and is past President of the ThinkFirst Canada injury prevention group, in addition to numerous sport safety committees. She is the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Pashby Sport Safety Award and was honoured at the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame at Induction 2005.
