Dr. Amer Johri , Cardiologist, Kingston joined the Echocardiography group at Queen’s University in 2010 after completing an Advanced Fellowship in Echocardiography (Level III) and Multi-modality Imaging at Harvard University Medical School, Boston MA. Dr. Amer Johri , Cardiologist, Kingston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Founder/Director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Network at Queen's (CINQ). Dr. Johri has the distinction of Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) in recognition of his various contributions to the advancement of the field of ultrasound. Dr. Amer Johri , Cardiologist, Kingston has served on the Boards of the ASE and Canadian Society of Echo, is the immediate past Chair of the ASE Circulation and Vascular Ultrasound (CAVUS) Council and is the Founder and former Editor-in-Chief of POCUS Journal.

His particular interest is in 3D echocardiography, quality control in the echo lab, interventional echocardiography, and Hand Held Cardiac Ultrasound. He also has extensive experience in echo-guided CRT optimization and TEE guided percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVI).  Dr. Johri’s research focus involves patient-oriented research projects and Atrial Fibrillation and Treatment Options the innovation of non-invasive techniques to predict and diagnose atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This includes: carotid intimal medial thickening, 3D strain and 3D stress testing, cardiopulmonary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), screening of special populations such as competitive athletes and women, analysis of vulnerable atherosclerotic carotid plaque through 3D, composition, and novel ultrasound contrast applications. He is chair of the ASE guideline for the Assessment of Carotid Arterial Plaque by Ultrasound, and also chaired the ASE Statement on Point-of-Care Ultrasound during the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Pandemic. His laboratory is supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

A normal heart contracts and relaxes to a regular beat, but if you have atrial fibrillation, the atria (upper chambers) beat out of sync with the ventricles (lower chambers).

During a coronary angioplasty, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into an artery, typically in the groin or wrist, and guided to the blocked or narrowed coronary artery. The catheter is equipped with a deflated balloon at its tip. Once the catheter reaches the target area, the balloon is inflated, which compresses the plaque against the artery walls and widens the artery, restoring blood flow.

In many cases, the angioplasty procedure is followed by the placement of a stent. A stent is a small, mesh-like metal tube that is inserted into the artery  of the heart after the balloon is inflated. The stent helps to keep the artery open and prevents it from re-narrowing. There are two main types of stents: bare-metal stents and drug-eluting stents. Drug-eluting stents are coated with medications that help reduce the risk of the artery re-narrowing.

Coronary angioplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia, and the patient is awake during the procedure. It is considered a minimally invasive procedure and has become a common treatment option for coronary artery disease. It can relieve symptoms such as chest pain (angina) and improve blood flow to the heart, thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks and other complications associated with CAD.
