Ashtanga yoga is a type of yoga that was originally transmitted by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Today his grandson Sri Sharath Rangaswamy continues in his grandfather’s tradition of Ashtanga yoga.
Ashtanga yoga involves synchronizing breathing with a progressively more challenging series of postures. This exercise process produces intense internal heat and a purifying sweat that detoxifies the muscles and organs. Ashtanga yoga is a vigorous moving meditation that helps to improve focus and mental clarity, and to relieve anxiety and stress in day-to-day life.
Ashtanga yoga practice is six times a week. Rest is traditionally taken on Saturdays as well as full or new moon days. Please take a moment to read our Yoga Studio Etiquette.
We also offer Mysore at the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Toronto. Mysore is the traditional way of learning Ashtanga, and the class is not led by a yoga teacher but rather instruction is given on an individual basis. As the yoga student gains strength and flexibility, poses will be added.
