Duration: 1 minute, 50 seconds What You Need To Know About Concussion First, it’s very important to understand what a concussion is. What we’ve learned is it’s a sexy word for ‘brain injury’, so we must take it very seriously.
Because we can’t see it, touch it, smell it, it certainly is a not-known entity to us so we really have to start educating ourselves on the cause, effect, and consequence of this injury.
We now know it’s an invisible injury because we can’t see it on a CAT scan, MRI, and it’s really the person telling you what the symptoms are. On that, obviously, it used to be having your bell rung.
We always took it as if a concussion was almost a badge of courage, being that I was a gladiator, that I could play through a concussion. I think it’s really important to understand that it’s around us 24/7.
It doesn’t know age, it doesn’t know gender, and it certainly doesn’t know the activities we do. A lot of people think it’s on contact, so hockey, football, basketball. It’s really about the collisions that create the injury, not the contact itself. We must understand it can happen to you at any time, any age, any activity. That means falling down a set of steps, on a skateboard, snowboarding, or in a hockey match.
Any symptom must be taken seriously. There’s roughly 21 different symptoms that they’ve come up with to kind of identify that there is a possibility of concussion. You don’t need to have all 21. Only one can detect that there’s a concussion.
It’s really getting proactive and understanding that you need help as soon as there are lingering effects from that hit. I think taking a pause, being able to communicate automatically will be able to determine whether or not you should take a rest.
Certainly, as soon as you feel that you need to take that rest, make sure you communicate with somebody that can get you to proper management.
