Featuring Dr. John Watterson, MD, FRCPCWhat is the Diagnosis and Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Duration: 1 minute, 18 seconds

Rheumatoid arthritis is a relatively common, chronic autoimmune inflammatory condition affecting joints and other tissues in the body.

It affects about 1 percent of the population, so it's very common. The incidence does increase with age, however. Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis will seek a diagnosis initially and a treatment algorithm, generally with a rheumatologist who specializes in the care of people with rheumatoid arthritis.

It is a disease which, in most individuals, is lifelong, although there may be periods of time where one is in remission or free of symptoms from the disease. The most important initial concept to develop in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is one where treatment is key early on.

And this not only reduces the signs and symptoms of disease quickly and makes patients feel better, but also prevents long-term damage, which accrues over time and is much more rapid in individuals who aren't properly treated.

If you have questions or have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, you should be seeking help with your healthcare provider.  He or she may also refer you to a specialist in the field of rheumatology who deals with people with rheumatoid arthritis.
