The majority of Canadians have been exposed to shingles already through a chickenpox infection.

In fact 95% of the Canadian population. The reason why it's important to speak to your physician is that as we age the risk for shingles increases as well as a painful condition related to that called post herpetic neuralgia.

Once you have a case of shingles you have an acute painful condition that's very challenging to treat. Moreover complications can arise including post herpetic neuralgia, infections of the eye, and even of the skin.

As part of your preventative health your physician may speak to you about the shingles vaccine. The vaccine is a one-time shot given under special circumstances, and it's very effective. In fact, 50% effective to reduce the chance of shingles and 66% effective to reduce the risk of post herpetic neuralgia.
