With respect to 1st MTP fusion the risk of surgery is the risk of the anaesthetic and the risk of infection. The main risk with 1st MTP fusion is that the bones do not unite and this can be due to a number of reasons; maybe inadequate fixation, inadequate preparation of the joint surface, biologic factors such as osteoporosis, diabetes, smoking and other factors. Nonunion of the 1st MTP joint can be associated with pain. If so, it may be recommended to have a revision or a re-do of the surgery using more robust hardware to ensure rigid mobilization as well as the use of artificial bone stimulating substances. It is important to note that postoperative swelling is quite common and it is quite common to have swelling in the foot at three months and often times there can be some mild swelling lasting from six to nine months. As long as the swelling resolves with elevating the leg it is generally not concerning.
