Symptoms & Treatment of Allergic Reactions
Duration: 2 minutes, 14 seconds

Allergic reactions are very common.

We see them many times a day in the emergency department. They come about for a variety of reasons, and most people are very knowledgeable about allergic reactions, especially if they have had one previously.

The important signs to watch for with allergic reactions are trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, if you are feeling quite nauseated, you throw up, or you have a rash that is rapidly expanding, then you should seek medical attention.

When you come to the hospital, there are a number of treatments that are available, depending on the severity of the allergic reaction. In simple allergic reactions, you may be just given some antihistamines by mouth to alleviate the rash and mitigate the hormonal response associated with allergic reactions.

In more serious cases, more extensive treatments will be required, such as intravenous fluids, cardiac monitoring or intravenous medications. In rare cases, you may require hospitalization to fully manage the allergic reactions.

Once you know that you are allergic to certain substances, such as peanuts, or insects such as bees, wasps, or medications, it is important to write those down, and inform your healthcare provider every time you speak with them. In addition, simple treatments can be helpful at the time of exposure, including the taking of antihistamines, or the use of an EpiPen.

Anytime you are concerned about your allergy, or are having an allergic reaction, do not hesitate to go to a healthcare facility, emergency department, or call 9-1-1 to get the first responders and ambulance to assist you.
