Prostate Cancer - the antioxidant power of Eggplant Dr. Christopher Allard, MD, FRCSC, Urologist,
Eggplant is rich in a wide variety of antioxidant compounds including anthocyanins which provide its purple colour. Generally speaking, an antioxidant rich diet is protective against various types of cancer and may contribute to a reduction in prostate cancer risk. It also contains a compound called chlorogenic acid. Anthocyanins and chlorogenic acid protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which in the long term, may help prevent cancer. Adding eggplant into your diet is yet another way to achieve eating more colourful vegetables which should be the goal when meal planning for optimal nutritional benefit.
Sarah Ware, Registered Dietitian
Also known as aubergine or brinjal depending on geographical location, eggplant is a member of the nightshade botanical family which also includes tomatoes and potatoes. Contrary to popular belief, nightshade vegetables are not uniquely inflammatory nor do they worsen inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Although not particularly rich in many vitamins or minerals (aside from potassium), eggplants do contain a wide array of antioxidant compounds including anthocyanins which are responsible for its purple colour. Anthocyanins are part of a broader antioxidant family known as flavonoids, which may have unique mental health benefits due to their anti-inflammatory effects on brain cells. Beyond these compounds, eggplants are characterized by their high soluble fiber content which contributes to their soft, spongy feel. Soluble fiber has unique benefits for gut health, blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
