Duration: 1 minute, 12 seconds

One piece of equipment that is often overlooked is a mouthguard.

A mouthguard for both juniors and seniors is incredibly important nowadays with all the information that's coming to us concerning concussions. Not only does a mouthguard help protect your teeth if there's an impact, but it also helps and acts as a shock absorber on your jaw, so that if you get an impact, it softens the blow going towards your brain.

So a mouthguard isn't only protecting the teeth, it's protecting your brain against concussion; very important piece of equipment.

A mouthguard might not last you the entire hockey season, so it's really important that if there's any breaks or splits, or if the child, for example, bites through the mouthguard, that's a sure indication that it's time to get a new one.

If it gets any dirt in it, it's time for a new one - don't forget it's going into your hockey bag and straight from your hockey bag right into your mouth. So make sure that your mouthguard is in good shape and that it's very clean.
