One of the primary responsibilities that physicians have is to educate or to teach patients, and we all enjoy doing that, and we have traditional methods of doing it.

We all have these models in our offices, in the back of our desks, in our coat pockets, and they’re exceptional ways of educating patients. Alternatively, there are lots of new technological tools we can use for patient education.

Patient education videos that are available on the Internet are a great way to introduce patients to new topics and to help explain conditions. For example, by bringing up a video and showing it to the patient, one could really streamline education.

It could allow the physician to pull the video up while reviewing the chart, having the patient understand what our point is and what our key teaching points are to maximize the control of their medical conditions. So moving from providing a patient a tablet, one can as a physician think of one step further.

Embedding patient education videos within the electronic record and within patient chronic disease templates are an ideal method of keeping track of what information you’ve given to the patient, what information you emailed to the patient as part of your educational plan, and also to plan for future visits. Having a patient education video embedded within their electronic medical record, is an ideal way of providing patient education in an efficient manner.

As a physician, if you’re ready to take the next step and use patient education videos and new technologies into your clinical practice, the advice should be to talk to many friends, mentors, and peers who are already using this technology in their office.

Next, you can talk to your information technology office within the province, and finally, you can also talk to your electronic medical record vendor for ideas and advice.
