CT Scan - Advantages of Dental Implants
Duration: 1 minute, 24 seconds

In dentistry, we can take a special type of CT scan which allows us to visualize a certain part of the jaw.

It’s significantly lower radiation dose than a medical CT scan would be and it gives us information as to the three-dimensional shape of the jaw. We can see how high the bone is, how wide the bone is, and also to some extent it gives us information as to the quality of bone.

The advantage of having the CT scan is it can allow us to more accurately treatment plan. It can give us an idea as to the size of the implant that can be placed. It can also give us an idea as to the amount of bone present so we can decide if a bone graft needs to be done prior to or simultaneously with the implant treatment.

From a patient perspective, it actually allows us to reduce the chair time because we’ve planned for the treatment that will be provided. And it can allow for minimal changes intrasurgically.

So CT scans taken in dentistry have a significantly lower radiation dose as compared to traditional medical CT scans. Whether you require one would be determined by your dentist. You would go for an implant workup and they would let you know if you are candidate to receive one prior to implant therapy.

If you have any further questions about CT scans or implant treatment please contact your local dentist and they would be able to advise you regarding whether you’re a candidate for such a treatment.
