Well if you stop and think of it, if you're playing hockey, you need the proper protection and there's really no extra meat or flesh over top of the tip of your elbow bone, so, it's very important to have a good-quality elbow pad.

One of the things from before in the past, an elbow pad really didn't have that much freedom of movement. And when you consider, that's a lot of movement, through the elbow joint. Nowadays, you have elbow pads that move much more freely, they're much more segmented.

You have two different pieces - they have a separate forearm piece, separate bicep piece and a lower piece that should meet the top of the glove. The upper piece should meet the bicep pad on your shoulder pad. The top piece is to protect the bicep and the lower piece to protect the forearm.

And the most important thing is the way that an elbow pad can lock on the body and hold its position properly through the various use of straps and the moulding that is now in elbow pads. They're more anatomical than they've ever been, there's truly a left and a right.

And with the inner lining a lot of times it's antimicrobial, antibacterial, which will help protect the body from any sort of staph infection or similar type of infection.

Remember that elbow pads protect a very important joint and they need to fit properly. The other thing is it must meet the top of the glove and meet the lower bicep pad on your shoulder pad, so in order to get fit correctly, see a qualified retailer in your area.
