Advantages of an Insulin Pump and How Can They Help

Featuring Cecilia Hamming, RN, BA, Medtronic CPT

Duration: 2 minutes, 6 seconds

One of the advantages that insulin pumps can offer is reducing the number and the severity of hypoglycemic episodes. This is done by using short-acting insulin and infusing at smaller amounts, and by using the continuous glucose sensor so that a patient gets an alert when their blood glucose level falls.

Because there's no long-acting insulin on board, this allows them to be able to change their infusion rates on a short-term, immediate need basis. Some of the pumps offer a continuous glucose monitoring system as well.

Some of the pumps offer the function of a low glucose shutoff, which means the pump will stop infusing based on your blood sugar going low. Another benefit is less needle pokes, as the infusion sensor is changed every two to three days. For people that are taking multiple daily injections, this may help increase their quality of life.
