An ACL injury is an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. It’s in the middle of the knee joint, it’s one of the biggest stability structures of the knee itself.

It happens commonly in soccer because of the quick deceleration involved in soccer, the quick changes in direction, pivoting, landing, usually with a knee extended. There’s a number of factors that are involved.

A lot of it is to do with the mechanics of how individuals are moving. There are studies that have been done that show that females have different mechanics that put them at increased risk to tear the ACL or completely rupture it.

There’s other theories that are involved too, that due to hormonal factors and just the body makeup itself.
