Dr. Andrew Thamboo, MD, MHSc., FRCSC, ENT Surgeon Sphenoidotomy - Surgical Teaching Video

Duration: 1 minute and 11 second

Hi, I'm Dr Andrew Thamboo. I'm from the St Paul Sinus Center here at the University of British Columbia, and today we're going to talk about sinus procedures to optimize your outcomes for your sinus patients.

In this video, we're going to discuss the sphenoidotomy. In sphenoidotomy, one of the key steps is identifying the superior turbinate. Here we resect the inferior aspect of the superior turbine, specifically the last 1/3. The natural OS is usually at the level of the roof of the maxillary sinus. Here, I used a freer to dilate the sinus cavity. I use cutting instruments, like the Kerrison to open up. I like the Kerrison as it's safe, as you can feel behind a faceless sphenoid cavity, and you can know when you're going to hit the skull base. You can use that Kerrison as almost a seeker in that way.

I hope you appreciate those surgical pearls for looking for more opportunities to learn to improve your surgical outcomes for your patients, definitely look for courses across Canada.
