The most important step to take if you have any respiratory disease - asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - is to make sure that you're not smoking.

Stopping smoking is the best thing that you can do for your lung health. The commonest cancer in both men and women is lung cancer, and so smoking is the cause of nine in ten lung cancers.

If you can stop smoking, and if you can't stop smoking, make sure you go and see your family physician for help in terms of stopping smoking.
