A neurosurgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the brain and nervous system. Neurosurgeons treat patients with a variety of diseases and illnesses including stroke, infections, tumours, epilepsy and degenerative spinal diseases. If a patient is referred to a neurologist, he or she will undergo a neurological examination, during which time the neurologist will review the patient's health history and current condition.

Neurologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of neurological conditions. When a patient is referred to a neurologist, they will typically undergo a neurological examination, which involves a thorough review of their medical history and a detailed assessment of their current condition. During this examination, the neurologist will evaluate the patient's symptoms, neurological function, and may order additional tests such as imaging studies or laboratory tests to help make a diagnosis.

Based on the findings of the neurological examination and any additional tests, the neurologist may provide a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. Treatment options in neurology can include medications, lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, and referrals to other specialists if needed. Neurologists commonly treat conditions such as epilepsy, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and peripheral neuropathy, among others.

On the other hand, neurosurgeons are medical doctors who specialize in performing surgical interventions for neurological disorders. They have expertise in the surgical treatment of conditions affecting the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves. Neurosurgeons are involved in the management of conditions like brain tumors, hemorrhages, spinal cord injuries, congenital malformations, and nerve compression syndromes.

If a patient's condition requires surgical intervention, a neurologist may refer them to a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon will review the patient's medical history, perform a thorough evaluation, and determine whether surgery is necessary and appropriate. If surgery is recommended, the neurosurgeon will perform the procedure, which may involve various techniques such as tumor resection, decompression of spinal nerves, or implantation of neurostimulation devices.
