MIST stands for 'minimally invasive surgical treatment’.

MIST has created for a patient's a new option rather than taking pills and drugs daily for the rest of their life or surgery, which is done in the hospital in an under an anesthesia to a less invasive technique. There is a certain percentage of men who don't want to be on medications for the rest of their life and potentially may fall into retention later due to prostate regrowth.

Unfortunately, the digital rectal exam is not the best tool to measure prostate volume and doesn't allow us to measure the height or volume of the prostate. So as such patients will continue to potentially have growth in their prostate examination, which wouldn't be picked up during regular rectal examination. As such, the use of ultrasound or cystoscopy may allow for continued monitoring of the prostate volume and size.
