Beth Ballard Bio

Beth holds a Bachelor of Human Kinetics from the University of British Columbia, with a special interest in psychology and health promotion. She further pursued her education in physiotherapy at UBC and obtained a Masters of Physical Therapy in 2007. Her career began in Maple Ridge, where she gained experience in critical care, joint replacements, aquatic therapy, and hand therapy within public practice. Later, Beth relocated to Vancouver Island and dedicated four years to home and community care. During this time, she focused on home safety, falls prevention, and chronic disease management, specifically working with conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Beth witnessed the benefits of movement and exercise for the older population and developed a passion for helping individuals improve their fitness levels to prevent physical decline and falls. Upon her move to Cranbrook, Beth worked at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, where she treated a variety of conditions in both outpatient and acute care settings. Her expertise included joint replacements, fractures, falls prevention, strokes, and other neurological conditions. In her current private practice, Beth utilizes manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, exercise, aquatic therapy, and patient education. She primarily focuses on the geriatric and neurological population, including individuals with stroke, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and multiple sclerosis. Beth places a high value on lifelong learning and continues to pursue courses in both orthopedics and neurology. She has completed Orthopaedics Division Levels 1 and 2 for upper and lower extremity, basic Bobath courses in stroke management, Total Joint Replacements, and Hand therapy. Recently, she has undertaken multiple courses in the NDTA method (neurologic developmental treatment) and is a certified PWR!Moves therapist for Parkinson's disease. Outside of work, Beth cherishes spending time with her husband and two boys, exploring the Kootenays. She indulges in activities such as gardening, camping, hiking, and visiting local beaches with her family. Photography and yoga are among her hobbies. Beth has also incorporated the therapeutic properties of essential oils into her physiotherapy practice, utilizing them for tissue healing and pain management.

Sciatic pain or sciatica is a common symptom rather than a specific diagnosis. It refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and into the legs. This pain can vary in intensity and location, but it typically affects one side of the body.

The sciatic nerve can be irritated or compressed due to various underlying causes. Some common reasons for sciatic pain include:

  1. Lumbar disc herniation: When the gel-like material inside a spinal disc protrudes or leaks out and presses on the nerve roots, it can cause sciatic pain.

  2. Spinal stenosis: This condition involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots.

  3. Piriformis syndrome: The piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, can sometimes irritate or compress the sciatic nerve, resulting in similar symptoms to sciatica.

  4. Spondylolisthesis: This occurs when a vertebra slips out of place and puts pressure on the nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve.

  5. Muscle imbalances or tightness: Issues such as muscle imbalances, poor posture, or tightness in the muscles surrounding the spine and pelvis can contribute to sciatic pain.

  6. Trauma or injury: Accidents or injuries that affect the lower back or buttocks can lead to sciatic pain.

It's crucial to consult a physiotherapist or healthcare professional for a thorough assessment when experiencing sciatic pain. They will evaluate your symptoms, perform physical examinations, and may request imaging tests to identify the specific cause of your pain. Based on the findings, an appropriate treatment plan can be developed, which may include exercises, manual therapy, pain management techniques, and lifestyle modifications.

Remember, each case of sciatic pain is unique, and the treatment approach may vary depending on the underlying cause. A professional assessment will help determine the most effective strategies to alleviate pain, promote healing, and prevent future episodes.
