  My belly was distended and hard. I had a high fever and nausea. Joan told me that I was constipated and had the flu. 30 hours later I was having surgery to remove 2 feet of my large intestine. I wore a colostomy bag for one year. My calcium was high. My vitamin D low. My legs ached constantly and I had twice passed kidney stones. Joan said that she didn't think it was my parathyroid. Another doctor ordered a simple blood test. Not only did I have a parathyroid tumor, it was ectopic - near my heart. My sister had extreme abdominal pain. Familiar pain. Joan was well aware of her stage 4 ovarian cancer from 15 years prior. Joan decided to send her for an MRI. It was scheduled for 8 months later. Another doctor said that she would be dead in 8 months. One phone call later, a mass was discovered on her pancreas. She had her spleen and part of her pancreas removed. My mother has chronic UTIs. Knowing this, Joan did not bother with a follow up after her most recent episode. Another doctor discovered that the infection was pretty severe. It took 3 courses of antibiotics to clear. Also, over 20 years ago, mom was in such pain from her shoulder and back. Joan did not bother with any investigation. She prescribed cortisone shots and physio. Still in pain 10 years later and Joan repeated the treatment. Another 10 years pass. Joan said cortisone and physio. Another doctor did a simple investigation. Mom has a torn muscle in her rotator cuff. She is now too old and frail to endure surgery. A year ago, my brother's blood work was abnormal. Joan said that she would keep an eye on it. Wait and see approach. Turns out he has a blood and bone marrow cancer.
